How to solder copper pipe
TOOLS THAT YOU WILL NEED TO COMPLETE THIS JOB:
--Eye Protection
--Leather Gloves
--Sodering Torch
--Flux
--Small Brush
--Sand Paper
--Pipe Cutter
--Solder
--Pliers
Be sure to were eye protection and leather gloves.
1. Take the pipe cutter or saw and cut the section that you wish to work on out.
2. Take the sand paper and clean the edges and also sand the area that you will be soldering, this will clean it up.
3. Take the new fitting that you are soldering and also sand the inside to clean it up. This will help the solder to stick better.
4. Take the brush and dip it into the flux (you want to make sure you get plenty of flux but don't goop it on).Apply the flux to the inside of the fitting repeat for the pipe.
5. Take the fitting and place it over the pipe. Make sure that it is pointing in the direction that you want it to.
6. Take and unroll about 6 inches of solder from the roll. Don't cut it off from the roll you want to use the roll when holding the solder so you don't get burned.
7. Start the torch; turn the dial so you get a nice flame coming from it. The thinner the flame the hotter it gets.
8. Holding the torch about 2" to 3" inches away start heating up the pipe and fitting until it gets nice and hot you will notice a slight color change. If the pipe that you are soldering is holding water it might take longer for the pipe to get hot.
9. Take the solder and start touching were the pipe and the fitting comes together with the tip of the solder.
. DON'T PLACE YOUR HAND UNDER IT; IT WILL DRIP AND BURN YOU
10. If the pipe is hot enough it will suck the solder into the crack and seal it.
11. Repeat steps 4-10 until the job is complete and you have no open ends.
12. If you are done go and turn the water on and check for leaks.
Note: If you do have leaks; take the torch and heat up the area and apply more flux to the area and some more solder. If that doesn't work you might have to remove the fitting by heating up the new solder and taking the pliers and turning it until it comes off.
